Marvin LeRoy Norman Jr. is a Counselor-in-Training (CIT) pursuing a Master of Science in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at Grand Canyon University. He holds a Master of Education in Special Education and has eight years of experience in education, including six years as a special education teacher and case manager. Throughout his career, Marvin has worked closely with children, adolescents, families, and multidisciplinary teams to support students with diverse academic, behavioral, emotional, and developmental needs.
As a special education teacher and case manager, Marvin has extensive experience developing and implementing Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and conducting data-driven progress monitoring.
He has collaborating with school psychologists, speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists, behavior specialists, administrators, and families, and advocating for students with disabilities. His professional experience has provided him with a comprehensive understanding of the relationship between emotional well-being, behavior, academic achievement, and family engagement.
Marvin’s decision to pursue clinical mental health counseling was shaped by both his professional experiences in education and his personal experiences as a father. Having supported countless students and families while also navigating educational systems from a parent’s perspective, he developed an even greater appreciation for the importance of advocacy, individualized support, and collaborative relationships. These experiences strengthened his commitment to helping individuals and families feel understood, respected, and empowered throughout their mental health journey.
Marvin’s counseling philosophy is centered on the belief that meaningful change begins with authentic connection. He believes every individual deserves the opportunity to reach their fullest potential regardless of the labels, diagnoses, or life circumstances they may encounter. His approach emphasizes creating a safe, supportive, and nonjudgmental environment where clients feel heard, accepted, and empowered to identify their strengths while developing practical strategies to overcome life’s challenges.
His professional interests include working with children, adolescents, college students, and families experiencing behavioral challenges, emotional regulation difficulties, anxiety, depression, and life transitions. Marvin has a particular passion for supporting individuals with ADHD and autism spectrum disorder, students at risk of school failure or expulsion, gifted students experiencing emotional challenges, and families navigating educational systems through IEP and Section 504 planning. He is also interested in promoting self-advocacy, academic success, and healthy transitions into higher education and adulthood.
Committed to lifelong learning, ethical practice, and professional excellence, Marvin continues to expand his knowledge through graduate education, professional development, and interdisciplinary collaboration. His long-term vision is to integrate education and clinical mental health by providing counseling, educational consultation, family advocacy, and community partnerships that empower individuals and families to recognize their strengths and reach their fullest potential.
